Where do I find information on old merged or bankrupt companies ?

I bought about $3,000 worth of stocks in a company in NY about 15 years ago. I moved a few times since then. I am unable to locate this company. Either it has merged or gone bankrupt. Is there any way to find out what happened?

Check with the office of the Secretary of State, in the state the company was incorporated in.
