get a credit report and make sure you are not a victim of identity theft
Inform in writing the collections agencies that the person they are looking for is not you and that they are to cease and desist harassing you. If they don’t you will have your lawyer contact their lawyers.
Just shred them. If it’s not you you don’t have to worry about it.
I’ve been getting calls and letters for 3 years over an old roommmate’s debts. I just ignore them.
Contact the agency that is sending you the letters and explain to them that the social security number is not yours. If that doesn’t help check out your credit report and see if the debt is on there. If it is you can dispute it and explain your reason for the dispute and they will investigate it and if it turns out that you are right they will remove it from your report and that should also help with the collection agency.
They think they have found the debtor because you have the same or similar names. Send a certified letter to them pointing out they have the wrong SS#. You DO NOT need to provide your SS#, only state that they have the wrong person, it is not your SS#, and that you know nothing of the debt.
Send a copy to your state Attorney General’s office.
